I'm an idiot
ok so it turns out I'm just stupid. I posted earlier about seeing the oresteia on the thursday before visiting days, but it turns out my friend who told me about it (he just said he had a show going up on thursday) was talking about the freshman musical (Shady Business), not the oresteia (which goes up on friday). That's at 7:30 in the Agassiz Theatre in Radcliffe Yard. So, whoever said they wanted to come to the oresteia, how about a musical instead? haha, my bad.

First Substantial Post
Greetings, friends! My name is Charlie, I play violin and do math, and I live in New Haven, CT (enemy territory, as I've come to call it over the past few months). Seriously, though, my dad is a professor at Yale, my violin teacher is on the faculty there, and I've even taken a handful of math courses at Big Blue. So I'm all Yaled out!
I really love playing the violin. I used to adore all the romantic concerti, but then their sparkle started to fade on me a tad. Now my preference has turned to earlier music. Well, by "earlier music," I mean Bach. Just Bach. Sometimes I just sit back and listen to it for hours (although such extended periods of listening to music usually happen only when I'm bed-ridden). I've concluded that all other music pales in comparison.
I'm also into math. I like to spend a lot of time - weeks, occasionally months - working on a problem. However, I am never working on one problem exclusively; rather, I frequently tackle new problems before I have solved the old ones. As a result, there are all these unsolved problems lying in the back of my head, waiting to be worked on. This arsenal of unsolved problems comes in rather handy, however, when I am in a situation where I am compelled to sit in a boring place for an extended period of time (which seems to happen all too often).
I am very excited about Harvard (did I say excited? WOOOOOOO!!!). I'm not yet sure what my major, um , concentration
will be, but I'm leaning towards math and considering physics and economics. I'm also interested in the humanities, but I really am quite ignorant when it comes to the humanities. To remedy this situation, I plan to "branch out" at Harvard and take a lot of humanities courses, particularly in literature, history, and philosophy.
I look forward to meeting all of you, either at the visiting weekend or in the fall!

Gilmore Girls (a very guilty pleasure)Movies:
The Princess Bride, Valmont, Sense and Sensibility, Mulan, Beauty and the Beast, The IncrediblesSports:
I used to run track, but that was stopped early on by knee injuries. I wasn't that good anyway...just did it for fun, but nowadays, I wonder, how could I ever have thought that running was fun
? I also like badminton and volleyball.Band/Music Artist:
The Postal Service, Enya, Queen. I tend to like individual songs more than artists, so very little is coming to mind...Board Game:
Taboo. It's the only one I've ever played...Food:
Mmm. Pork buns.Books:
Almost anything Jane Austen, Corelli's Mandolin, Jane Eyre, Memoirs of a Geisha, and I really could go on for a long time...Anything Else:
I love to write. I also play the violin - albeit rather badly for how long I've been doing it - and am teacher myself the piano. I wish I could sing. I'm also a huge slacker at heart, and probably one of the worst procrastinators on this side of the Rockies...how did I get into college? :D
I never really expected to get in, but now I'm almost definite that I'll be going next year. (Plus, I'm Asian, so it's a parent's dream come true...hahaha...) Financial aid-wise, Columbia actually gave me a lot more. In fact even NYU gave me more, as I qualified for one of their school scholarship things. So there will be much calling to be done.
Anyway, I'm so excited about next year, and I hope to meet some of you over visiting weekend! Feel free to IM me, too! Current Mood: content

High School: Lowell High School
Hair Color: Brown
Eye Color: Blue
Height: 6' 4"
Favorite School Subject: Math (in Calculus right now)
Least Favorite School Subject: Physics (because of the teacher, not the material)
Possible Major: Mathematics, but nothing's set in stone.
Color: Sky Blue
Television Shows: Alias, The Amazing Race, Monk, Jeopardy
Movies: The Sixth Sense, The Wizard of Oz, The Goonies
Sports: Swimming, not too competitively though
Band/Music Artist: They Might Be Giants, although I'm more of a soundtrack person. Broadway especially.
Board Game: Monopoly or Cranium. Cranium is more fun, but I've run out of cards and have yet to buy an extension deck, so Monopoly it is for the time being.
Season: Fall, when San Francisco sees the sun
Books: To The Lighthouse, Bleak House, GREAT EXPECTATIONS, The Phantom Tollbooth, David Copperfield, Ward 6 (if that counts as a book, my English teacher calls it a short story.)
Anything Else: No words can describe how happy I was three days ago. My body probably used up its full supply of endorphins, if that's possible. If I could go anywhere (with enough money,) I'd choose Harvard in a heartbeat. Of course, the money situation is a big "if," so I'm still not sure about where I'll be next year. My tax returns took a while to get to the Financial Aid office, so I haven't received my offer yet. *crosses fingers*
Out of all the activities there were brochures for, Dorm Crew piqued my interest the most. Who knew menial labor could be so enticing.
*waits for 1 AM to roll around so he can tape PBS broadcast of Stephen Sondheim's "Passion" in concert*

I think y'all should check this out if you haven't: http://www.yaledailynews.com/article.asp?AID=28974
Yes, I know it's Yale, but it did a better job than the Crimson did on the story, sad to say. The gist? It's close to 5.5 percent acceptance rate for Harvard regular decision this year. We're a lucky bunch. Anyone else an early defer/regular admit? So excited to be allowed to go.
Also, I was wondering how people and their families are feeling about financial aid. I haven't received my package yet, but other schools have been very stingy and I was wondering if people have found Harvard more or less generous than, say, Columbia or Brown. It's funny that Harvard has earmarked 84.6 million dollars for financial aid this year for undergraduates, which would average out about $40,800 for every admitted student, yet college packages in general can be so small.

Location: Ardsley, Westchester County (a suburb close enough to NYC that I can be ridiculously happy about once a month, but far enough for my friends and I to spend most of our weekends driving around aimlessly, searching for something open past 11. It gets better in spring/summer, because parks have no closing times.)
Birthdate: February 22, 1987
High School: Ardsley High School
Hair Color: Brown
Eye Color: Green
Favorite School Subject: English, Politics, History
Least Favorite School Subject: Physics (would be calculus, but I dropped math!!!!)
Possible Major: English or Political Science
Color: Olive green
Television Shows: The Daily Show (my friends and I are watching it live in July!), Six Feet Under
Movies: American Beauty, Adaptation, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Garden State, Donnie Darko (director’s cut), Maria Full of Grace, Requiem For A Dream, I Heart Huckabees, Waking Life.
Sports: Very much not my thing, though I’ve always wished I’d learned frisbee or hacky-sack. I recently discovered that exercise helps increase life-span, and as I’d prefer to die after 30, I’ve actually been running during phys ed, instead of my activities pre-revelation: read my New Yorker and listen my ipod while walking on the treadmill at 2.0.
Band/Music Artist: Belle & Sebastian, Elliott Smith, Death Cab For Cutie, Rilo Kiley, Tilly and the Wall, The Decemberists, The Magnetic Fields, Wilco, Jonatha Brooke, James Taylor, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell
Board Game: I just learned Risk; it’s a wild game. Also, card game: spit (no slaps, though; it ruins the game!)
Food: vegetarian, interesting
Season: summer (but really, anything not winter)
Books: Everything is Illuminated, The Great Gatsby, The Grapes of Wrath, A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius, America the book, Mrs. Dalloway, Hamlet, Pride and Prejudice, E.E. Cummings poetry, Mary Oliver poetry
Anything Else: I play cello, piano and sing. I love to read. I love concerts, and wish they didn’t make my wallet empty. I love to be around people, but am a hopeless elitist. I love to be alone, sometimes. I wish I’d done more community service in high school, and plan to do a lot more in college. I am quasi-politically active; e.g. I sign petitions and will never stop discussing/arguing, but have never been to a protest.
And: I was so, so, so surprised to get in to Harvard. I applied on a whim, because my mom figured that if this whole process is such a crapshoot then I might as well; I’ve never visited. When I found out I got in, I couldn’t stop laughing the whole night. But you all seem really interesting, and are making me really happy, even before I’ve met you. I hope we can talk. My email is firstname.lastname@example.org, and my AIM is music22287 (but my computer can’t handle AIM for the moment, so I may not be on for a while).

Favorite School Subject: I just realized I don't have any classes that I really enjoy this year... no wonder I'm slacking off so much. Math isn't bad. In general, I'm a math and science kind of guy.
Least Favorite School Subject: History (interesting, but I'm terrible at it)
Possible Major: lots of them! Umm... something to do with math, science, economics, politics, or music. Yeah, I picked undecided.
Color: black (not a goth though)
Television Shows: The OC is about all I watch... I love the classics though, like simpsons, seinfeld, family guy, newsradio
Movies: The Big Lebowski, Office Space, The Usual Suspects... I could go on
Sports: Don't play any, but I love watching football, soccer when I can, baseball during the playoffs and occasionally regular season. I plan to play at least intramural soccer if not more next year
Board Game: Pictionary, taboo if that counts. I really love board games.
Food: Pizza (I am going to BALLOON in college)
Season: Spring (this weather is perfect...)
Books: I remember when I used to have time to read for pleasure... maybe I shouldn't waste so much online... nah. In terms of non-school, I really liked ender's game (nerdy yes, but I tore through that thing) and the various sequels. Al Franken's books are hilarious.
Anything Else: Over the last couple days I've become incredibly excited for next year. I'm also feeling very overwhelmed right now, but in a good way.

I love to sing, read (I LOVE Harry Potter), write, stargaze, etc. I love Astrononmy, although I do not think I want to study it at Harvard. I'm a very social person and am always up to do something spontaneous. Uhhhh...can't think of much else. Current Mood: tired
